This is an article I wrote for my Flawless Natural Health website. I thought, maybe some athletes and bodybuilders might want to have a read. We tend to forget these things sometimes! Here it is:
You HAVE to learn to read the labels!
1. Different manufactures quote different serving sizes making it hard to compare. This can really reflect significantly in the Calorie, Carbohydrates, Fats, and Sodium, just to name a few. The top label is from a bag of regular Quaker Oats. Low in fat, no sodium, no sugar. Also look at the ingredient list; in this case it says: 100% Rolled Oats….nothing else! So you know this is top quality food, and you know is great to eat without question!
However……I used to put bouillon cubes in my rice for flavoring. That was until, someone pointed out the ingredients. Nothing personal against the product, they sure make it taste great, but look at what is inside?
Let’s have a quick look. The numbers are for only a half a cube. A long time ago I would mix in up to 2 cubes! So just one cube would be 2220mg sodium! My other concern, is looking at all the other ingredients that you need to be aware of. In this case it is, Palm oil, Hydrogenated beef fat, but no fat is listed, how is that possible? Without long explanation, we all already know, palm oils and Hydrogenated fats or oils are very undesirable health wise. Other products will have other hidden chemicals and hidden sugars. Have a look at a protein or energy bar. You can see up 3-4 types of sugars all under different names.

Like I said, nothing against people like Unilever who market this product, I know it tastes great. My goal here is while athletes and health conscious people know they should look at labels, they quite often don’t. Please learn to read these labels, check as to what is the portion size, is it what you use? Learn to recognize what ingredients you need to keep away from, or keep to a minimum, and make better choices.
