Most athletes know that one of the best ways to shed fat, is to cut carbs while eating a diet high in protein and essential fats. Cutting carbs helps prevent over spiking of insulin, and encourages your body to release stored fat that can be burned as fuel. There are several types of low carb diets which we will explore, the first being the Paleo diet.
The Paleolithic Diet is a philosophy to eat the way our ancient ancestors did. They did not have access to crops or grocery stores of any kind for that matter! This limited them to consuming the plants and animals they could hunt and gather. The bulk of their diets consisted of large amounts of meat, when they were available. Otherwise they subsisted on plants; wild berries, greens, and nuts and seeds when available. The argument is that our bodies were genetically adapted to better process these foods rather than the advent of agriculture and modern food processing. Who knows for sure exactly how cavemen ate (including bugs and other not so appetizing things), but certainly, not eating sugar, processed foods, and at least limiting grains is not unlike how many athlete’s eat today.
